Work experience

Jorge Leandro is a Lecturer of hydraulics who from 2012 has been working as an Akademisch Rat (Lecturer) by the Hydrology, Water Resources Management and Environmental Engineering Chair at the Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany. In addition he is an invited Prof. at the University of Coimbra and a senior researcher at the Marine and Environmental Research Centre, Portugal.  Jorge Leandro has a strong track record regarding the numerical modelling of urban drainage and hydraulic structures, publishing several key papers on the numerical modelling of urban flood events using coupled hydraulic models. Jorge Leandro currently led the Foundation for Science and Technology project “Experimental validation of the theoretical Multiple-Linking-Element (linkage-model) for improving integrated sewer/surface Urban Flood Models”, the Dual Drainage – Initiation of International Collaboration funded by DFG, and supervises three PhD students in numerical modelling with grants “"Development of a State of the Art Urban Flood Model (UFM)” SFRH/BD/81869/2011, “Numerical Modelling Advances in Urban Flooding” SFRH/PROTEC/67486/2010 and SFRH/BD/85783/2012. Previously to his academic career he has worked for five years as a Civil Engineer for two large Portuguese consultancy companies, namely COBA, SA and Engidro.

Education and training

Jorge Leandro did his PhD in Exeter University, UK on: “PhD Thesis: Advanced Modelling of Flooding in Urban Areas: Integrated 1D/1D and 1D/2D Models.” Under the supervision of Prof. Slobodan Djordjevic and Prof. Dragan Savic.

His undergrad degree (5 years Degree) and MSc thesis (2 years degree) were completed in IST-Lisbon. The MSc Thesis was on: “Enabling the MacCormack's original scheme to perform Dam-break flow by fitting a smoothed initial condition on a fixed non-uniform grid”, supervised by Prof. Helena Ramos.
