What I want to achieve in my groups...
The main goal of my tutorial is to introduce you to Bochum Ruhr-University, and to guide you through the first days and weeks of your studies.

We will meet once per week for a standard double-period (90 mts) in a small group of people. There is no limitation to the number of participants, and you do not have to sign up for my courses.

Throughout the tutorial I will provide you with all necessary information about your individual studies, and help you solve any problems that you may encounter.

My tutorials differ greatly from your regular courses, because I do not assume the role of a lecturer or teacher. Hence, you do not have to sign attendance lists, do homework, or strive after grades. I want it to be YOUR course, which means that YOU will decide what topics we will discuss and how the individual sessions will look like. In contrast to your regular courses I want this tutorial to be informative and entertaining, and, at the same time, relaxing, recreating and casual. Thus, you may bring along food and beverages, you do not have to switch off your mobiles, and you certainly do not have to ask permission to leave the room (the latter applies to all other courses as well!). :-)

You may also consider the tutorial an opportunity to let off steam, if you feel unhappy about anything. On rare occasions, students have had rather serious problems with their teachers. If that is the case, I will help you acting as a mediator between the individual teacher and yourself. Thus, if you have problems with a teacher or university employee, come and see me first instead of rushing into an office hour.

Furthermore, I am at any time open to suggestions, changes, and criticism. Please let me know immediately if you feel uncomfortable, bored, or unable to cope with what I am telling you. And do not hesitate to pose questions or ask for individual help.

What I am going to tell you about...
- The campus & UNI-Center: general orientation and directions

- The humanities: the Faculty of Philology, the Examination Office, the English Department, the Optionalbereich

- The university administration: student office, student ID card, BAFöG office, copy cards

- Your first timetable

- Your first and second term: B.A. study system, courses, requirements, credit points (CPs), examinations

- Terms 3 to 6: basic vs advanced modules, final B.A. examination, M.A. vs M.Ed. studies

- Your obligatory stay abroad: spending (at least) six weeks in an English-speaking country

- The university library & the English departmental library: lending books, copying, online and offline search

- Written assignments: bibliography, class minutes, handout, research paper, written examinations
