Finally on the road! To the Belgium coast!
Keeping the reports of the Beaufort exhibition in mind - combined with memories of walking barefoot on the beach - the landcape of the lower rhine passes by.
|
Brugge
Everywhere there is something to explore, no matter which direction...

|
The Netherlands are reached on the first day. Even in my direction calm ways can be found. They go through woods or follow canals...
On the second day the border of Belgium is passed.
|
Quite soon Antwerpen will be crossed in search of an tunnel for cyclists,
to get in style by elevator(!) to the other side of the Schelde river.
Fortunately I've had been in Antwerp before, so I knew about this unusual kind of crossing a river.

Anne & Patrick Poirier: Acqua Scivolo

The medieval charme of
Brugge keeps me for a day.
The old town offers so much to see, buildings, bridges, canals, parks and more...
Now the time has come to get hold of the hiking guide
of the Beaufort exhibition! My aim was to go there, but Brugge will see me again!
|
Nieuwpoort will be my base for touring the Begium coast. But first the different locations of the hiking guide have to be submitted into the
GPS.
Only with small baggage I go to De Panne in search of Gormley's "rusty guys": They have already left their place and lay "lazy" in the sun...

Nieuwpoort
Sui Jianguo: Chinese Garden
More...?
|
Middelkerke
Wim Delvoye: Caterpillar
More...?
|
The cross of Poirier can be seen from far, it leads to a ordinary parking lot of Koksijde-Oostduinkerke.
Back in Nieuwpoort I try to make pictures of all the objects within the floodgate named Ganzenpoot, especially the Pegasus from Jianguo's "Chinese Garden".
Can't get closer than an total.
|
Back on the promenade I follow the coast,
her tram and pass Delvoye's "Caterpillar".
It's drags me to Oostende, place of James Ensor's work.
|
Oostende
Daniel Spoerri: IK, James Ensor
More...?
|
De Haan
David Mach: The Diving Woman
More...?
|
There the study of Ensor can be found, cast by Spoerri in bronze.
On my way I pass an empty galery, because the work of Braeckman has been
destroyed by vandals!
Still in thoughts I'm heading to De Haan...
|
Mach's frozen moment is still there...
The request to respect art can be found on its foot!
What is happening here? In Blankenberge the chicken from Vanmechelen's installation "The Cosmopolitan Chicken..." are protected by the police, they should not follow the fate of their predecessors.

Blankenberge
Thomas Ruff & Co: Billboard
More...?
|
Zeebrugge
Johan Muyle: What a wonderful world
More...?
|
On the first glance there seems an UFO to have landed on the beach of Zeebrugge, the sight of Winter's & Hörbelt's "Gangway" is very unreal.
Quite close to the maritime theme park Seafront (it includes a light ship and a submarine), a drawbridge got a new dress by Muyle.
From time to time she bows impressive to its audience.
In the Seafront some of the work of Panamarenko is shown.
There are also cafe's, that are inviting for a break...
Great!

In Knokke-Heist not just the Beaufort exhibition finds its end but also the coast of Belgium.
Visch' wanderer continues to dance unimpressed on its rope, also the fire red goats of Cracking Art are not taking notice.
My way will now go back to the East, where I was coming from.
Just after crossing the border to the Netherland, I decide to stay in Sluis.

Sluis
Sluis schmiegt sich sich noch immer in seinen Stadtwall und grüßt von weitem mit seiner Mühle.
|
The charm of Sluis lies not only within its seeting in the the landscape, but also its gastronomic variety.
Quite soon I follow again the direction of the clouds and enjoy the calm farmland, leaving the busy coast behind.
|
My luck with the weather seems to disappear, its getting colder and dark clouds are now coming up. The nights are becoming really chilly,
I wasn't used to freeze anymore. Even the wind during the day changes its face: From a nice welcome fresh breeze to a strong headwind. No more easy spinning along the embankment.
But my luck wasn't fully gone... On my very first night back home the noise of rain drops on the window wakes me up, but after realizing where I'm my eyelids got heavy again.
