History

Karelia´s history goes way back into the past, the first ancient "Karelians" were settling 8000 years ago at the Ladoga sea. The 6000 years old petroglyhs at the Onega sea are another traces.

"Korela" (name from Russian chronicles dated from 1143) was trading fur in the 11th and 12th century, as far as Byzanz. Christianity came from there also...

Karelia was always bordercountry: The border from the 18th century, which divided the power between Sweden and Russia, was nearly the same as today.

Finland became a autonomous grand duchy with the whole Karelia in the 19th century under Russias influence. This connection between North-Karelia and Ladoga-Karelia made the development of Karelian cultur possible, that lead later to the finnish national epic Kalevala collected by Elias Lönnrot (first edition 1835)...

Finland gained independence in the first quarter of the 20th century!

The winter war 1939 and the peace treaty 1940 divided Karelia again: North-Karleia remained Finnish and Ladoga-Karelia became Russian. The inhabitant of Ladoda-Karelia were evacuated and settled down in East-(= North-Karelia) and South-Finland.
