The La Gamba Biological Station is run by the University of Vienna, Austria, and provides an ideal facility for an 'in situ' Symposium on orchid bees. It has both comfort and athmosphere being situated in a large tropical garden full of euglossophilous plants adjacent to primary and secondary rain forest.
It is ~25 km from Golfito (see map below) and can be reached easily from San Jose using one of the following options:
Option PUBLIC BUS:
Tracopa has several buses leaving San Jose each morning with direction Golfito or Paso Canoas, see here. Ask your hotel receptionist to procure a ticket for you in advance.
For people travelling from San Jose to La Gamba on the morning of April 4th there is the option to catch a specific Tracopa bus that leaves the bus terminal at 6:30 AM. This bus will take the coastal road (which is faster than the mountain route) and will arrive at Villa Briceno ("kilometro 37“) shortly after noon. It is a regular public bus, but it will provide the opportunity for participants to travel together. If this fits your travel schedule, please send a brief email to both Thomas and Santiago (thomas.eltz@rub.de and sanram@ucdavis.edu) to let us know that you would like to be on that bus. We will coordinate the purchase of tickets ahead of time, and we will have our trusted taxi driver (Julio Vargas) deliver the tickets to you, either at your hotel or at the Tracopa bus station (Calle 5, Avenida 18) briefly before departure. If you stay at a hotel in downtown San Jose, Julio can also pick you up there and take you to the Tracopa bus station in the morning of April 4th. Julio has a mini-van that can fit up to eight passengers with luggage. If you chose this option, please let us know which hotel you are planning to stay and also provide a phone number for us to coordinate.
At the end of the bus ride get off the bus at the village Villa Briceno (better known as "Km 37" - "Kilometro Treinta y siete") and take a taxi (US$ 10) to the 'Estacion Tropical La Gamba'. To be able to get off at km 37 you may have to remind the bus driver to actually stop there - otherwise you might end up in the small town of Rio Claro.
Option DOMESTIC FLIGHT
The airlines Nature Air offer regular flights from San Jose (Juan Santamaria Airport, SJO) to Golfito (US$ 149.- one way with 18kg checked luggage and 4kg hand luggage). Departure at 03:35pm with arrival at 04:35pm.
Taxi from Casa León or Fleur de Lys to the airport (JSO) US$ 30 (1-3 persons) / Private Transfer US$ 46 (1-10 persons).
Take a taxi (US$ 25) from Golfito to the 'Estacion Tropical La Gamba'.
