Research

I am currently completing work on a monograph on the mouth, Middle English Mouths: Religious and Medical Traditions in Late Medieval England, and preparing a new research project on The Medieval Body in Time, which approaches lifecycle stages through the lenses of skin, flesh and the physiology of the interior body. I am also editing two essay collections, one, Reading Skin in Medieval Literature and Culture is forthcoming with Palgrave, and another, with Mary Flannery, on Imagining Inquisition in England, 1215-1550 will be appearing in 2012. More broadly, my research interests lie in the relationship between medieval medicine and literature, the human body, medieval literary theory, pedagogy and epistemology, and the idea of the vernacular.

Biography

I read English and Related Literature (BA) and Late Medieval Studies (MA) at the University of York (1998-2002) and completed my Ph.D. ('Discourses of the Human: Mouths in Late Medieval Religious Literature') at the University of Cambridge (2006). I came to Bochum as a Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in 2007.
