Programming such systems

Very often questions of the following kind are asked

§      What is the evolutionary goal?

§      Who defines which micro-controller ?

§      Which program will be the fittest? or

§      What is the selection pressure?

The answer is extremely simple but difficult to appreciate: There is no 'fittest', there is no 'external selection pressure' other than just to be! The programs and micro-controllers survive because they are surviving! They fit into the already existing organization of the other micro-controllers or are able to shape this organization. Whether, as with our relationship to the biosphere, such organismic programs can be harnessed to solve our problems, depends on more subtle forms of programming than simple instruction to perform tasks. This is a valid and worthy object of inquiry in its own right, and one that we are endeavoring to address in our research.
